As a postscript to the previous post...

I accept that the ICC, E(W)CB, the ACB and all other kinds of quangos and organisations and associations and politicians are responsible for the decline and stasis surrounding ‘West Indian’ cricket.

I mustn’t forget Sir Allen Stanford, Giles Clarke, or any of the other great and good who should have checked up on the pitch and sorted this fiasco.

But blaming the WICB feels better because, according to my Dad, ‘dey did treat Sobers bad. Very bad.’

So there.

The WICB are greedy little basket (cases)

I hope (against hope) that a great game of cricket will start tomorrow (Sunday, 15th February). I am furious at the WICB and their blind greed. If, as some newspaper reports suggest, groundstaff highlighted serious issues at the North Sound arena from November 2008, then why did the relevant authorities not ’fess up and do something about it back then?

Money.

The Caribbean-based cricketing board feared losing revenue from visiting England fans, and West Indies supporters arriving from other Caribbean countries.

If people had been thinking clearly, there might have been time to knock the old Antigua Recreation Ground back into some kind of shape, or even move the Test to another ground on another island or country - as with the Sabina Park débacle in 1998.

Sadly, I don’t think any heads will roll over this sorry saga at the WICB. And bwoy, heads should roll.

Sir Vivian Master-Blaster must be the main executioner. The poor man, all this has broken his heart. This just makes me angry, and more than a little disgusted if I’m honest.

It all comes down to the money... ?

It a££ ¢ome$ down to the mon€¥

lyrics from the hip-hop track by Terminator X (and featuring Whodini)

It all comes down to the money
Whether it`s rainy or snowy or sunny
Funny, but it all comes down to the money
I`m in it
I`m in it for the cash
I`m in it for the cash

I wish that the players - the England XI (and the coach!) would man up and tell us straight that money was the deal with Stanford. The West Indies players (sorry, Stanford Superstars) are usually more honest about this sort of thing - perhaps because the region historically - and collectively - has lacked the English embarrassment regarding monetary matters.

In any case, it looks as though even the lucre-loving E(W)CB are having second thoughts about this 'tournament'...

Now I know why I’m feeling queasy about Stanford...

" Now whoo wants tah git a hold of mah assits furst??? "

This explains why I felt uncomfortable about the Stanford deal.

He's actually gone and proved that what I said in an earlier blog about cricket selling out is kinda true.

Not even the most ambitious soccer WAG would allow herself to be photographed like this with a man like this (willingly)...

I am actually on the side of the ladies here.

I refuse to judge them - some things are more important than money...

...and I am not blaming Sir Allen either. Mr KP said that they didn't set up this situation, they play where they're told for England. I do not blame the players at all.

Nor their unfortunate wives and companions.

Turgid Twenty20 for 20

I’m falling asleep...

sorry Middlesex and T&T,

but this is terminally boring.

The ideal soporific.

Good night (yawn)...

I said I wouldn’t, but...

...here I am watching the Middlesex team vs England in Antigua (thanks to my favourite informal webcaster).

Tonight’s stream is great picture wise, but it keeps starting and stopping. Irritating.

But it’s nice to see a little ‘colour’ in the crowd for a change.

And many of the people look as I do.

But they’re not cold.

As I am.

All sold out in Antigua...

I’m losing track of the game that I love so much. ICL here, EPL there, - and never mind Mr Lalit Modi with his designs of global expansion for the IPL...

...and the dressing down of the WICB by the High Court in London only emphasises the continuing diminution of Caribean cricket, and its loss of independence. The days of pride, self-confidence and world-class teams (and attitude) are long gone. Reduced to a rich man’s plaything. I don’t resent the players for wanting to make a fast buck - the life of the cricketing pro is short indeed, most of the time. Make hay while the sun shines, strike whilst the iron is hot, all that gubbins. But whilst I am not as extreme in the condemnation department as a certain Mr S Hughes or a Mr J Agnew, I feel uneasy as to what this wager will mean for cricket generally in the future. It’s not the format, it’s the money that makes me feel queasy.

This ‘game’ simply feels like a sell-out.

Cricket finds itself a 'widow' in the next...

D'ya see ‘her’ the other day - with that strange-looking guy throwing her ‘corn‘ (and she picking it up too!) ?

Cricket once had ‘game’.

Man, I stayed up into the night to please that fickle spirit - and once followed those brave souls around the world (via radio 4 long wave) to catch the muse. I was called an anorak - and I wore that name as a badge of pride. (Still do, if I'm honest)

Now the sport stands accused of “marrying the 'spirit of the age' ” rather than staying put with her former soulmate.

Good G_D Almighty.

Why am I saying this ?

Because of this...

And to think that I had a go at the BBC for not bidding.

I apologise unreservedly if this story is even half-true...

...for the Corporation would have been entirely correct not to contribute a penny of the TV licence fee money towards this set-up.

I am angry at myself for half-believing the hype. But even at its worst, the Beeb does have some standards left. They did very well to distance themselves from this ‘situation’ that English cricket finds itself in right now.

{note to reader: it's like watching a once-attractive - if formerly rather prim - married woman making a total fool of herself over not ONE, but TWO unsuitable men whilst her erstwhile (and rather boring) husband shakes his head and waits patiently for his wife, this 'stupid woman' (quote unquote) to come to her senses and return home to the children before they all end up playing football}

For if the Antiguan crusade succeeds, all well and good for the players and 'West Indian' (should really read Caribbean) cricket.

But if the November night tryst at twenty hours for $20 million falls flat, cricket in England - and maybe in the ‘WIndies’ too - may well find itself a ‘widow’ in the digital age - and ClearBlue might eventually tire of this bruised, haughty little ‘game’ as its summer companion...

...polo anyone?

R•I•P Terrestrial Coverage of Cricket in the United Kingdom.

Much loved (even when interrupted for the 3:30 at Catterick) and missed

(NB - I am NOT referring to the players - I am glad that they can earn decent money - but to the higher-level administrators who have put the game on a platter and served it up to Mammon - big time. These guys have stitched up the game - and also themselves. This will not endear the sport to those children who no longer play. What bargaining power do the E-Z Beez have now? Do they have a ‘plan B’?)

(NBB - title is a misquote from the late (and missed) Archbishop of Cantebury, Dr Runcie - who in turn took it from the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, W.R. Inge - here is a best copy taken from “Between Two Worlds” by Dr John Stott. This quote is fashionable again, clichéd, but still true - and not just for ecclesiastical matters...)

(NBB - I'm not turning into a Torygraph reader, am I? Please say no...)

Crusaders off to Antigua!!! Spitfires shot down at the death!!!

Good for Middlesex (Crusaders) - very bad for Kent (Spitfires), they also deserved to win.

But there can only be one set of winners (on the flight to Antigua)...

I have behaved badly today.

That Irish guy begging me for money - then WorldVision guy Gabriel @Shepherd's Bush shopping centre opposite BoooksEtc (now no more) - then me pretending to support ltvn through his bad link to the final, then me hopping off to chavstar at the drop of a hat (I'm a cricket channel slag - no loyalty at all). Sins...

  • indifference to the poor (Irish guy in Harlesden)
  • indifference to the poverty stricken (World Vision)
  • hypocrisy - pretending to care then jumping into someone else's ship when I didn't get what I wanted (ltvn tried, wasn't happening. Pretended to be nice, but I left him alone for a better stream of T20 on another channel...)

Now I feel ashamed because I have no shame. If I'm like this for a game of cricket streamed across the web, what would I be like for something of real importance???

I'm now going to feel very bad about myself. I hate me today. I'm a middle-aged no-hoper. What's up with me?

Will cricket ever be shown (or made available) on terrestrial or Freeview TV ever again? Will anyone give a monkey's t*ss if it isn't?

Yet more cricket lost to clear blue Skiee...

Stanford's T20 'bonanza' now draws county champs into its convoluted web.

What a drag.

Exclusive TV rights are of course garnered by 'you-know-who'...
...even this form of the game has been lost to the terrestrial viewer.

It looks as if the game I love is being pulled away from me, no mater where I turn.

All we're left with is the radio. But will it continue to be TMS?
